Camera Raw 8.1 Release Candidate for Photoshop CS6 Now Available

Camera Raw 8.1 and DNG Converter 8.1 Release Candidates are now available. This release includes support for HiDPI capable displays, bug fixes, new camera support, and new lens profiles.

Photoshop CS6 customers traditionally have received camera updates through Camera Raw 7.x releases. This is the first time that we are providing camera support through a version of the camera raw plug-in that is a whole version number greater than the version of Camera Raw that shipped with a specific version of Photoshop. (Photoshop CS6 shipped with ACR7 and now we’re providing support to CS6 with ACR8.) As mentioned here, this change allows us to be consistent with our past policy of providing raw support for currently shipping products. However, when ACR8 is hosted by Photoshop CS6, it will not offer any of the new features described in Photoshop CC marketing materials for ACR8.

May 6, 2013 - Today’s Photoshop CC announcement requires a modest change in our camera raw support policy. Because Adobe is still selling Photoshop CS6, those customers will continue to receive updated camera raw file format compatibility via Adobe Camera Raw 8. When we update ACR8 with new camera support, Photoshop CS6 customers can work with the new version of the Camera Raw plug-in. No new features or functionality will be available in ACR to Photoshop CS6 customers as part of those updates. (No Upright, advanced healing brush or radial filter, etc.) I don’t have a timeline for how long this camera raw support will continue for Photoshop CS6 but I want to be consistent with our past policy of providing raw support for currently shipping products.

New Features in Photoshop CC

Photoshop CC brings a wide range of new features and enhancements designed to unleash creativity and boost efficiency whether perfecting photographs, designing for online and offline media, creating 3D artwork or shooting video.

A fleet of new tools introduce the most advanced deblurring and sharpening technologies to date. The new Camera Shake Reduction tool analyzes and corrects for blur from camera movement to produce a better image. The all-new Smart Sharpen tool uses adaptive sharpening algorithms to minimize noise and halo effects while producing high-quality results. With intelligent upsampling users can increase the size of an image – large enough for a billboard – without pixelating the image.
Adobe Camera Raw 8 brings three new photo-editing capabilities to Photoshop CC. The Advanced Healing brush allows photographers to “heal” or “patch” images with a brush stroke instead of a circular area. The new Radial Gradient offers powerful controls to draw attention to the focus of an image without applying a standard vignette, and the Upright tool automatically straightens horizons and applies perspective corrections without distorting the image. Camera Raw edits can also be made to any layer or file within Photoshop CC.
For designers, improvements to rounded rectangles add the ability to adjust corner radii at any time. Users can also now select multiple paths, shapes and vectors at once, providing a faster, easier workflow for working with multiple objects.
In previous releases, Adobe Photoshop Extended was released as a separate application comprising all Photoshop features as well as 3D and image analysis capabilities. Beginning with Photoshop CC, all Photoshop Extended features will be integrated within one application, providing all users with advanced capabilities for 3D image editing and image analysis.
Photoshop CC is the first Adobe desktop app to include the ability to post files directly to Behance from within the application, showcasing work immediately and integrating peer feedback into the creative process. Behance is the world’s leading online creative community, with over 1.4 million members.
Photoshop CC includes all the Photoshop feature innovation delivered exclusively to Creative Cloud members over the last year, including: Smart Object support for Blur Gallery and Liquify effects, Conditional Actions, and CSS support for faster web design.
Adobe is also previewing a new workflow from Photoshop CC to Edge Reflow CC that will enable creatives to build web designs in Photoshop that can easily be turned into responsive websites, viewable across devices. Unable to upload a large panorama to Adobe Revel via the Revel Publish Plugin

Lightroom Journal Documents "Disappearing Books" Bug in Lightroom 4

Lightroom 4 includes the ability to easily create and publish photo books. While many Lightroom customers have enjoyed creating photo books inside Lightroom, some have reported a disturbing bug about which I’d like to provide additional information.

The Issue

While working on a page spread that contains a caption with multiple colored text, the book can disappear.

To Avoid the Issue

Update to Lightroom 4.2 immediately. Lightroom 4.2 contains safeguards that may aid in the recovery of a lost book. To update, please either use the Help-> “Check for Updates” menu option within Lightroom or download the update here [Windows, Mac]
Avoid using multiple text colors within the same text box

Recovering a lost book

If you are using Lightroom 4.2*, this warning will appear.
Click “Cancel”.
Quit Lightroom 4.2.
The warning will appear again. Click “Cancel” again.
Restart Lightroom.
In the Book module, your book will be there.

*We are not aware of any methods to recover a lost book in either Lightroom 4 or Lightroom 4.1. Please update to Lightroom 4.2 through the Help->”Check for Updates” menu option within Lightroom or download the update here [Windows, Mac]

The Lightroom team is currently researching and evaluating this bug to ensure that there are no other ways that it can be triggered. Our aim is to include a fix in a future update to Lightroom 4. Camera Raw 7.2

Camera Raw 7.2 is now available as a final release through the update mechanism in Photoshop CS6. The goal of this release is to provide additional camera raw support, lens profile support and address bugs that were introduced in previous releases of Camera Raw. Customers of previous versions of Photoshop can utilize DNG Converter 7.2 for raw file support for newly added cameras.

As well as supporting new cameras and lenses, the following items have been fixed in Camera Raw 7.2:

Cannot change “Erase” size, feather and flow settings while utilizing the Option key.
Cannot write metadata to images previously opened in some 3rd party software.
Luminance Noise slider is unresponsive when Clarity is greater than 0.
In certain cases, the new Defringe controls can cause vertical streaks to appear.
Some images from Canon 5D Mark II exhibited pattern noise in the form of maze/green split artifacts.
Adjusting the Blue channel does not affect monochrome images.
Certain TIFF files can cause Bridge to become unstable.
Defringe settings are not retained when editing the file in Photoshop as a Smart Object and then returning to ACR.

Folder stacks with virtual copies get unstacked when moving to another folder.
Stacked photos get hidden in both the Grid view and Filmstrip. This occurs when photos get unstacked as a result of enabling auto-stacking.
Errors encountered when publishing videos to Facebook through the Facebook Publish Service.
Users may have occurred problems when trying to enter the Web Module from Library.
Unable to edit JPEG photos in Photoshop Elements.
Unable to upload files to Flickr if there is a carriage return in either the Title or Caption fields (Win only).
Background graphics that are applied to a Book globally may not appear as expected in a Saved PDF.
Certain book covers had spine text positioned in a Horizontal manner, not Vertical.
Double byte characters are not being exported to PDF in Books.
Photos were exported with original GPS coordinates recorded by the camera, not with the GPS coordinates updated in Lightroom.
Keyboard shortcuts in the Develop module sometimes do not work when editing an image in Process Version PV2010.
Parents and synonyms of "do not export" keywords also do not export.
Audio does not play in video files after creating a slideshow containing music (win7 only).

Estimated price does not update when switching between books in the Collection panel.
Postscript Type 1 Fonts do not appear in the Font menu within the Book module.
Filenames can be used as auto text captions within the Book module.
Fonts such as Courier New and Times were not displaying properly on books exported as PDF files.
The Adjustment Brush pin would not properly accept negative values.
Clarity adds grey tinting to 100% white tones.
Creating a soft proof does not add a line item to the History Panel.
Photos with GPS Altitude data will now properly display Altitude within Lightroom.
Unable to import RAW+ JPEG files directly from Canon 5D, Canon 5D Mark II, Nikon D700, Nikon D90, and Sony NEX5 cameras when connected through USB.
Unable to import RAW + JPEG files when using the built-in SD card reader on Macbook laptops in some scenarios.
Lightroom 4 and ACR 6.7 render files differently.

Lightroom 4 did not properly open external applications when using the “Edit In” functionality.
Point Curve adjustments made in Lightroom 3 have been restored.
Addressed performance issues in Lightroom 4, particularly when loading GPS track logs, using a secondary monitor, and the controls within the Develop module.
Ability to update DNG previews and metadata for more than 100 photos has been restored.
This update allows for improved viewing of subfolders and stacks in folders with a large number of photos.
It was possible that a layout of a saved book could be lost after quitting Lightroom 4.

Adobe Lightroom 4 Update Supporting Canon EOS 5D Mark III Expected This Week

Tom Hogarty, Lightroom Product Manager, has announced in a blog post that an update to Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4 is expected to be released as early as this week.

Especially good news is that, along with many bug fixes, this update will add support for Canon EOS 5D Mark III RAW files.

New Features in Photoshop CS6 Beta

Do You Qualify for a Free Upgrade to Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4?

If you purchased Adobe Lightroom 3 recently (many of you took advantage of the great Lightroom 3 deals), you may qualify for a free upgrade to Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4.

I went in circles with Adobe customer support a few times to find out what the cutoff date was - and Feb 5th, 2012 was the answer. I'm not 100% confident in this date, but it is likely correct.
