Canon USA has issued a Service Notice regarding the Canon EOS 5D Mark II "Black Dots" Issue:

"Safety Notice: Image quality phenomena that appear under certain shooting conditions.

Thank you for using Canon products.

We have learned that some users of the Canon EOS 5D Mark II digital SLR camera have identified two types of image quality phenomena that appear under certain shooting conditions.

“Black dot” phenomenon (the right side of point light sources becomes black)
Vertical banding noise

We are currently investigating and analysing the causes, and examining measures to reduce or eliminate these phenomena by providing correction firmware. An announcement will be made on the Canon Web site when such measures have been determined.

Details of the phenomena and shooting conditions under which they are likely to occur are as follows.

“Black dot” phenomenon (the right side of point light sources becomes black)
When shooting night scenes, the right side of point light sources (such as lights from building windows) may become black. The phenomenon may become visible if the images are enlarged to 100% or above on a monitor or, if large prints of the images are made.

Vertical banding noise
If the recording format is set to sRAW1, vertical banding noise may become visible depending on the camera settings, subject, and background.
Vertical banding noise is not noticeable if the recording format is set to sRAW2.
Vertical banding noise does not occur if the recording format is set to RAW or JPEG.
Noise can be reduced if C.Fn II-3: Highlight tone priority is set to 0: Disable.

Canon always strives to provide the highest quality products to our customers. We apologize for any inconvenience these phenomena may have caused. We appreciate your kind patronage and support.

Canon USA has issued a "Safety Notice Update: Counterfeit Lithium-Ion Battery Packs and Chargers"

"It has been confirmed that counterfeit Canon lithium-ion batteries and chargers for Canon digital cameras and digital video camcorders are in circulation. In addition, it has been reported that counterfeit batteries have been considered the cause of some battery ruptures.

In many cases, counterfeit batteries and chargers are not equipped with protective devices required to meet international quality standards. Therefore, when these batteries or chargers are used or charged, they can cause abnormal heat or leakage, ignition, rupture and other malfunctions in the batteries, chargers, and digital cameras and video camcorders. There is concern that, in the worst case, not only could digital cameras and digital video camcorders be damaged, but fire, burns, blindness and other severe accidents could occur. Thus, to ensure customer safety, we urge our customers not to use counterfeit devices.

Please be advised that Canon is not responsible, and will not be liable, for any malfunctions, damages or injuries caused by non-Canon genuine lithium-ion batteries and/or battery chargers including, without limitation, counterfeit devices.

Recently, both in Japan and overseas, counterfeits of Canon's genuine lithium-ion battery packs and chargers have been frequently offered for sale on the Internet. Accordingly, please use caution when purchasing Canon lithium-ion battery packs and chargers on the Internet to ensure that they are genuine Canon brand.

Canon's genuine lithium-ion batteries have security labels on their packaging that identify them as genuine Canon products. When purchasing battery packs, please refer to this information. (See the following image for the labels.)

For questions about "Counterfeit" products, please contact us at the following:

It's one thing to consider buying a 3rd party battery for our expensive DSLRs, but now we need to be careful even when buying Canon branded batteries. Purchase your Canon batteries from B&H, Amazon.com LLC (not a third party seller on this site) or Adorama with confidence.

I frequently get asked about buying third party batteries. While some may be good, I have not to this date purchased a non-Canon brand battery for any of my DSLRs. The one issue holding me back is that I've heard many reports of (at least some of) these batteries having short lives - meaning the value is not there. The other risk - that of a fire - risks costs far beyond the value of our expensive gear. That's where I am on this issue right now.

Think Tank Photo has announced the StreetWalker Backpacks.

More good information from Think Tank Photo: "In addition, our founder, Doug Murdoch, has published a new free white paper called “Active Shooting vs. Transportation/Storage.” [navigate to the news page for the PDF link]. As you know, Doug is one of the leading camera bag designers in history (he was the lead designer at Lowepro for many years before starting Think Tank three years ago). It is from this perspective that he wrote the paper: what type of camera bags do the pros use to fulfill different shooting challenges?"

Canon USA has updated the mail-in rebate notice:

"Dear Valued Customer,

This is an official message from Canon U.S.A., Inc.

The third-party rebate processing company, Continental Promotion Group (CPG), that was responsible for processing rebate claims and issuing mail-in rebate checks for Canon-brand printer and video products (along with many other products from a number of other companies) filed a Chapter 11 Bankruptcy petition on Friday, November 14. The funds provided to them by Canon U.S.A., Inc. (and other companies) are no longer available to satisfy the rebate checks that CPG issued on behalf of Canon and other companies.

Canon has made arrangements for such checks to be honored despite CPG's bankruptcy. Accordingly, if you have not yet presented such check to your bank for payment, please feel free to do so now.

Notwithstanding Canon's efforts in making arrangements to have rebate checks honored, as of the close of business on November 20, we received information that a small percentage of the outstanding rebate checks that were issued by CPG and dated on or before November 14, 2008 were returned unpaid. Canon has identified the affected customers and is in the process of sending replacement checks. Please allow approximately ten (10) business days for processing replacement checks. Canon will also reimburse those affected customers their returned check charge (see below for instructions). We apologize for any inconvenience, delay or confusion this situation with CPG has caused.

Accordingly, we request that you take the following actions:

If you are holding or receive a rebate check for printer or video products which is dated on or before November 14, 2008, and such check has not previously been returned unpaid, please present that check to your bank for payment. If you have not yet mailed in your rebate claim materials, please note that Canon has made processing arrangements with a new mail-in address. Please direct those materials to the following address instead of the address referenced in the rebate materials:

Canon USA Rebates
P.O. Box 342140
Bartlett, TN 38184

If your rebate check was returned unpaid as noted above, we are processing replacement checks now which will be mailed to you and you should receive in approximately ten (10) business days. Once such replacement check is deposited, please destroy your returned rebate check, which will not be honored. In the event your bank has charged you a returned check fee on the original rebate check which was returned unpaid, please submit the letter from the bank advising of such charge or, if unavailable, such other evidence as you may obtain that reasonably supports your return check charge to:

Canon Recovery
P.O. Box 343150
Bartlett, TN 38184

Please black out or otherwise delete any sensitive information, including your account number and statement balance from the documents you submit to support your request for reimbursement of a return check fee. Canon will promptly process these charges and reimburse affected individuals. We are committed to ensuring that you receive your rebate as soon as possible and that you will continue to have full confidence in Canon U.S.A., Inc.

We apologize again for any inconvenience.

Sincerely,

Canon U.S.A., Inc."

Amazon.com has Adobe Photoshop CS4 for $589.99. (Update: Now $579.99.) This is about $120 less than the going price. Purchase Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2.0 at the same time and get a 30% discount (on LR only).

Canon rebate problems - Here is Canon USA's notice to customers:

"November 17, 2008.

Dear Valued Customer,

This is an official message from Canon U.S.A., Inc.

The third-party rebate processing company that was responsible for processing rebate claims and issuing mail-in rebate checks for Canon-brand printer and video products (along with many other products from a number of other companies) filed a Chapter 11 Bankruptcy petition on Friday, November 14. The funds provided to them by Canon U.S.A., Inc. (and other companies) apparently are no longer available to satisfy the rebate checks such company issued on behalf of Canon and other companies. Regrettably, as a result, you should not cash the rebate check you recently received for such products, as it may bounce. We apologize for any inconvenience, delay or confusion this may cause. We are doing everything in our power to promptly rectify the situation.

Accordingly, we request that you take the following actions:

If you are holding or receive a rebate check for printer or video products which is dated on or before November 14, 2008, please do not cash the check, as it may bounce. Please look for updated postings on the Canon U.S.A. website on or about November 21, 2008 for further instruction on how to exchange your check for a new check that you will be able to cash. If you have not yet mailed in your rebate claim materials, please hold such materials until you receive further instruction. We are making new processing arrangements, with a new mail-in address. Please look for updated postings on the Canon U.S.A. website on or about November 21, 2008 for further instruction on where to mail your rebate claim material and how to exchange your check for a new check that you will be able to cash. Check our website later this week for further instructions and contact information for any questions you may have. Again, please do not cash any rebate checks for printer or video products which are dated on or before November 14, 2008, as they may bounce.

We are committed to ensuring that you receive your rebate as soon as possible and that you will continue to have full confidence in Canon U.S.A., Inc.

We apologize again for any inconvenience.

Sincerely, Canon U.S.A., Inc."

It appears that, in light of a bad situation, Canon USA is being very proactive in taking care of their customers.
