From Rode:

MacOS Sonoma and How It Impacts RØDE Products

Released 14 Sep 2023

Apple recently announced its latest major MacOS update, Sonoma. This is currently in beta and will most likely be rolled out in mid-late 2023.

A limitation has been identified in Intel-based Mac devices running Sonoma that affects compatibility with some MFi-certified USB audio devices (note: this does not includes M1 and M2 Macs).

MFi stands for “Made for iOS" and is a certification that denotes that an accessory has been approved by Apple to be used with its products. Many RØDE products are MFi-certified and will be affected by this limitation (along with audio devices from a wide range of other manufacturers). This causes compatibility issues and will likely mean you cannot use your RØDE product with your device that is running MacOS Sonoma.

This includes the following RØDE products:

AI-Micro
NT-USB+
PodMic USB
VideoMic GO II
VideoMic NTG
Wireless GO II
Wireless ME
Wireless PRO
RØDECaster Pro II (note: this affects USB 2 only)
RØDECaster Duo (note: this affects USB 2 only)

This limitation has been present in all beta versions of MacOS Sonoma, including the current “release candidate” version, and is likely going to be present in the public release.

RØDE has escalated this issue to Apple and we are waiting for further information on when it will be addressed. Until then, we recommend you do not update to MacOS Sonoma if you wish to continue using your RØDE product.

If you have any questions, contact our friendly customer service team at info@rode.com and we will be happy to help.

Tuesday, 1st March 2016, Sydney Australia – Leading pro-audio brand RØDE Microphones is excited to announce 'My RØDE Reel' is back for its third year and is bigger and better! With close to 5,000 video submissions from 89 countries, 'My RØDE Reel' has not only become the world's largest short film competition, but has also established itself as a staple amongst the global filmmaking community.

RØDE Microphones launched 'My RØDE Reel' three years ago to huge international engagement. The competition returns in 2016 with an increased total prize pool of more than $300,000 and more awards than ever before.

From amateur to professional – all filmmakers are encouraged to take part and tell their story. To enter 'My RØDE Reel', people are required to create a short film of three minutes or less, as well as a behind-the-scenes reel that features a RØDE product being used during the production of the film. The entry kit is available now at www.myrodereel.com.

As well as the four marquee awards featured in previous years - Judges' Film award for the best short film, Judges' BTS award for the best behind-the-scenes reel, publicly voted People's Choice award for the most popular short film, and the Young Filmmaker award for the best short film by an entrant under the age of 18 – RØDE is excited to announce the introduction of the Female Filmmaker award. This award, selected by the judging panel, is designed to encourage and celebrate women in the film community. Each of these award winners will be presented with an enviable production filmmaking kit valued at more than $30,000.

Additional technical and genre awards are available for Best Sound Design, Best Soundtrack and more, with a prize pack being awarded for each. And for the first time in 2016, RØDE has introduced a new genre award 'Music Video' to acknowledge filmmaking's many and expanding forms.

RØDE Microphones has brought together the most respected brands in filmmaking, to assemble an incredible prize pool valued at more than $300,000. This includes equipment from Adobe, Angelbird, Atomos, Blackmagic Design, Blastwave FX, Bright Tangerine, F&V, FilmConvert, Freefly, G-Technology, KesslerCrane, Miller, Movcam, Music Bed, New York Film Academy, NiSi, Paralinx, Red Giant, Sachtler, Shane's Inner Circle, SmallHD, Story & Heart, Teradek, ZEISS, and of course RØDE.

“Historically entries have been largely male dominated, however we're aiming to correct that this year with the addition of a Female Filmmaker award specifically designed to encourage women of all ages to get behind the camera and take part in My RØDE Reel.” he continued.

Entries for 'My RØDE Reel' are open from March 1st and close June 1st 2016. RØDE has provided a free entry pack, which is available now by registering at www.myrodereel.com.

RØDE Announces Six new Products at IBC https://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=15754&Title=RØDE-Announces-Six-new-Products-at-IBC

From RØDE:

Sep 11th, 2015 – In its largest-ever simultaneous product release RØDE has announced six new products today at the IBC show in Amsterdam, including two new microphones, a pair of carbon fibre boompoles, an XLR interface for Apple iOS devices and an XLR adaptor for the company’s popular RØDELink 2.4GHz digital wireless system.

RØDE’s VideoMic family is the world’s favourite on-camera microphone, and the company is proud to announce two new models in the range – the VideoMicro, and the VideoMic Me.

Measuring only 80mm long, the VideoMicro is a small, lightweight on-camera microphone designed for use on compact cameras. A directional microphone, it reduces distracting peripheral sounds and focuses on the audio in front of the camera. Its pickup is more forgiving than RØDE’s other on-camera microphones providing a more natural sound when recording indoors. Perfect for capturing incredible audio to accompany inspiring vision.

Included with the VideoMicro is a camera shoe mount with Rycote Lyre shock mount. Featuring a suspension structure composed of a hard-wearing thermoplastic, the Lyre is far more effective at minimising unwanted vibrations, handling and cable-borne noise than traditional elastic suspensions. Virtually indestructible, it will never sag, snap, wear out or require rethreading to maintain its effectiveness.

The VideoMic Me is a high-quality directional microphone designed for Apple iPhone and iPad. Featuring a TRRS connector and adjustable mount it is compatible with a range of Apple devices and can even accommodate some cases. It features a headphone jack conveniently located at the rear, to allow for monitoring and playback without removing the microphone.

Both microphones include a deluxe furry windshield and feature bodies made from aluminum, giving them a high level of RF rejection. The microphones are finished in RØDE’s high-grade ceramic anti-glare black coating.

Continuing its innovation in the mobile audio space, RØDE has announced the i-XLR, a digital XLR interface for Apple iOS devices. Used to connect professional XLR microphones to an iPhone or iPad to record audio in the field, the i-XLR allows reporters, correspondents and audio professionals to quickly and easily capture professional interview dialogue to a smartphone or tablet.

An intuitive record button provides the user with operation without accessing the mobile device, and an LED indicates the recording status (in supporting apps). A headphone jack with variable level is conveniently located on the body to allow the operator to monitor their audio during interviews, and for dynamic microphones the i-XLR features a +20dB level boost, giving these microphones a high level of clean gain.

To accompany the i-XLR RØDE has previewed an updated version of its RØDE Rec app that supports remote record functionality for the new interface device, as well as an innovative set of EQ presets for industry-standard interview microphones, that optimise the audio for consistency across recordings, as well as an optional 'safety track' that can be set at a lower level.

The revolutionary RØDELink digital wireless system has been making waves since its release earlier this year. Currently available as the 'Filmmaker Kit', including a camera mounted receiver (RX-CAM), beltpack transmitter (TX-BELT) and broadcast-grade lavalier microphone, its 2.4GHz digital communication technology allows for robust, secure transmission of audio at ranges up to 100m.

RØDE is excited to announce that it is expanding the RØDELink range, with the launch of the 'Newsshooter Kit', which includes a camera-mounted transmitter and the new XLR transmitter (TX-XLR).

It easily connects to handheld presentation microphones as well as shotgun microphones, with a 3.5mm input and headphone output. Providing one-touch sync with RØDELink receivers and supplying P48 phantom power, the unit can be powered by 2 x AA, a Sony NP-F970 battery or continuously via Micro USB.

RØDE also plans to make each of the RØDELink devices available separately, so customers can mix and match to suit their needs.

Closing out the product announcements, RØDE has introduced two new professional carbon fibre boompoles, complementing the company’s popular range of aluminium poles.

Weighing only 535gm (18oz), the new RØDE Boompole Pro extends to a full 3m (10’) and collapses to 810mm (2’8”). Each of the five pole sections is comprised completely from carbon fibre making it incredibly lightweight while maintaining high levels of strength. The sections are easily extendable with one hand thanks to an intuitive twist-lock mechanism.

Designed for use with professional shotgun microphones such as the RØDE NTG3 as well as the Blimp windshield system, the Boompole Pro joins RØDE’s popular boom pole range which now consists of five models ranging in size, weight, and construction material.

Alongside this RØDE has also announced the Micro Boompole Pro, a very thin version of the full-size carbon fibre model, optimised for use with the new VideoMicro microphone. Using a unique modular design, the Micro Boompole Pro’s three sections combine to a maximum length of 2.2m (7’2”). Using an industry standard 3/8” thread, these sections can also be used to extend the Boompole Pro.

The VideoMicro, Boompole Pro and Micro Boompole Pro are shipping now, and the VideoMic Me, i-XLR and RØDELink Newsshooter Kit will be available Q4 2015.

RØDE VideoMic Pro Upgraded with Rycote Suspension https://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=15101&Title=RØDE-VideoMic-Pro-Upgraded-with-Rycote-Suspension

From RØDE:

RØDE Microphones is announcing an upgrade to its number one selling microphone worldwide, the VideoMic Pro.

Originally released in 2010, the VideoMic Pro quickly became an industry standard on-camera shotgun microphone for professionals and enthusiasts alike. With its small form factor, superior audio quality and industry first +20db level boost, it was the perfect companion for DSLR cameras as they became the go-to device for high definition video capture.

Determined to raise the bar again in 2015, RØDE’s all new VideoMic Pro will feature the acclaimed Rycote Lyre suspension system, along with an upgraded microphone capsule, improving both the physical characteristics and audio performance of the microphone.

Already implemented on the VideoMic and VideoMic GO, the Rycote Lyre suspension system is widely regarded as the best microphone shock mounting solution available. Featuring a suspension structure composed of a hard-wearing thermoplastic, it is far more effective at minimising unwanted vibrations, handling and cable-borne noise than traditional elastic suspensions. Virtually indestructible, the Rycote Lyre will never sag, snap, wear out or require rethreading to maintain its effectiveness.

Completing the upgrade is an all-new microphone capsule, giving the 2015 VideoMic Pro even higher sensitivity and lower self-noise, ensuring crystal clear audio capture over a wider dynamic range.

“The VideoMic Pro was a revelation for DSLR users the world over, making broadcast quality audio accessible to everyone at an affordable price” comments Damien Wilson, RØDE’s Global Sales and Marketing Director. “Now we’re taking it to another level. From RØDE:

RØDE Microphones is excited to announce that the ‘My RØDE Reel’ international short film competition - first launched in 2014 to huge international acclaim - will return in 2015, with an increased total prize pool of more than $200,000 in prizes.

My RØDE Reel’s inaugural competition saw RØDE receive a staggering 1,120 entries from 76 countries worldwide, with nine category winners sharing a total prize pool of over $70,000, making it the largest short film competition of its kind.

Entrants to ‘My RØDE Reel’ are required to create a short film of three minutes or less, as well as a behind-the-scenes reel that features a RØDE product being used during the production of the film. RØDE has provided an entry pack that steps through the process, as well as templates for scripting, storyboarding and more, available now by registering at www.myrodereel.com.

There are three main awards and prize packs of filmmaking gear available to win -- a Judges’ Film award for the best short film in competition, a Judges’ BTS award for the best behind-the-scenes reel, and a publicly voted People’s Choice award for the most popular short film. Each of these award winners will be presented with an enviable production filmmaking kit valued at more than $40,000.

Additional technical and genre awards and prize packs are available for Best Sound Design, Best Soundtrack and more, and for the first time in 2015 RØDE has announced a Young Filmmaker award, to acknowledge and encourage entrants under the age of 18.

Joining an incredible list of sponsors and bringing the 2015 total prize pool to more than $200,000 are Atomos and Freefly Systems, supplying their Shogun 4K RAW Recorder and MOVI M5 3-Axis Gimbal Stabilizer respectively to multiple prize packs. They join an already illustrious list of sponsors including BlackMagic, Carl Zeiss lenses, Miller tripods, RedRock Micro rigs, SmallHD and Teradek monitoring equipment, Kessler sliders and jibs, ThinkTank Photo bags, Event studio monitors, G-Technology storage solutions, software from Adobe and RedGiant, licensing credit from The Music Bed and Film Supply, and of course plenty of RØDE microphones. A full list of the prize packs is available at www.myrodereel.com.

Once again, RØDE has brought together a respected judging panel for ‘My RØDE Reel’ that includes inspirational pioneer filmmakers Philip Bloom, Ryan Connolly, Vincent LaForet and Rodney Charters.

“Last year’s My RØDE Reel was really one of the best film competitions I have ever judged.” commented Philip Bloom. “The calibre of entries from all over the world was superb. I can’t wait to see what we get this year, it’s going to be even better I am sure.\"

"I’m really excited to engage with the next generation of filmmakers and to see what they come up with in the RODE Reel competition in 2015” added Vincent LaForet. “2014 was an impressive year and I can’t wait to see what they come up with this time!\"

Putting its “money where its mouth is”, RØDE has put together its own short film plus a complete series of behind the scenes tutorials to highlight the production process. Hosted by filmmaker Clinton Harn and the RØDE Production team, the course guides viewers through the filmmaking process from pre-production through to shooting and on to post-production.

RODE Announces Studio-Ready NT-USB Microphone https://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=10129&Title=RODE-Announces-Studio-Ready-NT-USB-Microphone

From RODE:

RØDE is excited to announce its newest microphone, the NT-USB -- a studio-grade microphone with the convenience of a digital USB interface. The NT-USB is fully compatible with MacOS, Windows and iPad.

While RØDE’s Podcaster USB microphone was released in 2007, its primary focus is to provide broadcast-quality voice recording, with its end-address configuration. The NT-USB on the other hand is a highly versatile side-address microphone that is ideal for recording musical performances in addition to spoken applications such as podcasting and voice-over.

The microphone is fully compatible with all mainstream recording applications on both Windows and Mac OS based computers, as well as the Apple iPad using RØDE Rec, GarageBand, or any other recording app that accepts an external microphone. Use on the Apple iPad requires a suitable USB connection adaptor, such as the Apple Camera Connection Kit.

The body of the NT-USB features a zero-latency stereo headphone monitoring (3.5mm) jack, which allows users to monitor the microphone input in realtime, along with dials to adjust the monitoring level and mix between the computer/iPad audio and the microphone input.

A premium pop-filter is included, which fits onto the base of the mic, positioning the filter the ideal distance from the capsule to minimise plosives (hard ‘B’, ‘T’ or ‘P’ sounds that produce a harsh sound) during singing or speech. Also provided is a high-quality stand mount with industry standard 3/8” thread, desktop tripod stand that allows the NT-USB to sit at a comfortable height on a tabletop, and a pouch for storage of the microphone when not in use.

The NT-USB is supplied with an extended 24 month warranty, which is free of charge to customers that register their microphone.

B&H has the Rode NT-USB USB Microphone available for preorder.

RODE Announces New iXY for iPhone 5, iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c https://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=10047&Title=RODE-Announces-New-iXY-for-iPhone-5-iPhone-5s-and-iPhone-5c

From RODE:

RØDE Microphones has today announced the iXY with Lightning connector for iPhone 5, 5s and 5c -- the highly-anticipated update to RØDE’s stereo microphone for Apple iPhone devices, that allows high-quality recording at sample rates up to 24-bit/96kHz.

The original iXY was announced in early 2013 and was the world’s first microphone for iOS devices, able to record at such a high-quality resolution. This innovative approach saw the iXY awarded several product design awards, culminating with the prestigious International Red Dot Design Award, which recognizes products of the very highest quality by an expert panel of 37 judges from around the world.

Equipped with the same broadcast audio performance as the original 30-pin microphone, the iXY with Lightning connector features a matched pair of ½ inch condenser capsules arranged in a stacked X-Y configuration, with on-board high-fidelity analogue to digital conversion. This ensures accurate, immersive and true to life stereo recordings.

Interchangeable rubber mounting clamps are supplied to suit both iPhone 5/5s and 5c, which also provide shock mounting and help to minimise vibration transferring to the microphone capsules. A foam windshield for outdoor recording and protective storage pouch are also included. The RØDEGrip mount is optionally available for mounting the iXY and iPhone on a camera or microphone stand, and a “deadcat” windshield for high wind conditions will be available shortly.

“The original iXY was an industry leader in both design and function, so we’re thrilled to continue this success with the updated version for iPhone 5.” commented Damien Wilson, RØDE’s Global Sales and Marketing Director. “Being able to record at this quality with a device that sits in your pocket has been a game changer not only for audio professionals, but for enthusiasts alike. We saw this first-hand with so numerous entrants to our My RØDE Reel short film competition choosing to use the iXY for their amazing short films”.

Finally, RØDE’s field recording app for iOS devices, RØDE Rec also recently received an update to increase compatibility and stability on the iOS 7 platform. RØDE Rec and RØDE Rec LE are available now in the App store for iPhone and iPad.

RØDE Announces New and Improved Blimp Windshield https://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=9753&Title=RØDE-Announces-New-and-Improved-Blimp-Windshield

From RØDE:

RØDE has today announced a fully updated version of its award-winning Blimp system. The new model is now twenty-five percent lighter, with Rycote Lyre suspension and premium Mogami cabling.

The original RØDE Blimp as launched in 2008, and quickly became the best-selling system of its kind. Upon release it was awarded both the European Red Dot and Australian International Design Award – two of the world’s most respected product design awards – recognising the Blimp as a product of sophisticated design, solving a number of challenges faced by location sound recordists.

This new version of the Blimp sees a range of functional improvements that make it unquestionably the best windshield and shock mounting accessory available.

Building on the system’s existing high level of performance, the Blimp’s shock mounting is now performed by the robust and user-friendly Lyre system, licensed from Rycote. Constructed from a single piece of hard-wearing thermoplastic, the Lyre provides superior acoustic suspension to traditional elastic solutions, and will never wear out, sag or snap. Whereas the previous Blimp required users to reconfigure the elastic suspension for heavier microphones, the Lyre is able to accommodate a range of microphones without any modification, making adjustments in the field even easier.

The Blimp’s handle has also been completely redesigned, reducing the product weight significantly, while increasing the ergonomics for handheld use. Housed inside the grip is a heavy-duty Mogami cable which splits via a junction box to a highly-flexible thin cable inside the Blimp, to minimise the transference of vibration to the microphone.

In addition to RØDE’s range of shotgun microphones – the NTG1, NTG2 and NTG3, the Blimp also accommodates most shotgun microphones up to 325mm (12 ¾”) in length. It attaches to any standard boompole via 3/8" thread attachment at the base. RØDE also offers the Universal Blimp Mount as an option to remove the handle when the Blimp is being used primarily on a boompole to reduce weight.

An artificial fur windshield (affectionately known as a Dead Wombat) is included for outdoor use to minimise wind noise. Additionally a compact folding brush is supplied to maintain the Dead Wombat’s artificial fur.

RØDE Announces Stereo Bar https://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=9252&Title=RØDE-Announces-Stereo-Bar

From RØDE:

RØDE is excited to announce that it has commenced shipping its new Stereo Bar for precision microphone mounting in stereo arrays.

Spacing between the microphones is clearly indicated on both sides at 10cm, 15cm and 20cm, as well as the critical 17cm distance for ORTF stereo technique. In the middle of the Stereo Bar there is an angle indicator displaying both 90 degrees for X-Y stereo arrays and 110 degrees for ORTF placement, removing the need for guesswork and allowing the recording engineer to set up precision stereo arrays every time.

Constructed from durable PC-ABS plastic the bar can easily support the weight of two large diaphragm microphones at a capsule distance of up to 20 centimetres (7 3/4”). Microphones are mounted via two removable 3/8” threads that slide along the bar, with spacers mounted below the bar that can easily be relocated to the top of the bar to configure stacked microphone pairs.

When combined with RØDE’s Pivot Adaptor accessory the Stereo Bar can be tilted through 210 degrees for optimal versatility.

RØDE Announces VideoMic Go! https://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=8332&Title=RØDE-Announces-VideoMic-Go

From RØDE:

The new VideoMic GO is the latest release in the Australian audio company’s successful range of VideoMic microphones for on-camera usage.

Compact and light weight by design, the VideoMic GO delivers clear, crisp, directional audio with incredible ease of use.

Its tight pickup area focuses directly in front of the microphone and reduces other surrounding sounds, ensuring that the user can isolate their subject from distracting background noise. At only 73gm (2.5oz) it is RØDE’s lightest on-camera microphone and sports an impressively compact form factor.

Designed to be as user-friendly as possible, the VideoMic GO has no switches or settings, and is powered by the camera or recording device’s external microphone input, requiring no batteries to operate.

The microphone features an integrated suspension based on Rycote’s Lyre system, which utilises a single piece of thermoplastic to isolate the microphone from knocks and bumps that could otherwise interfere with performance. In addition to its superior performance the Lyre system is hard-wearing and will never wear out, sag or snap, unlike traditional elastic-based suspension.

“The VideoMic GO is the perfect microphone for consumers wanting to get started shooting high-definition video with their DSLR, ‘point-and-shoot’ or even GoPro cameras.” Commented Damien Wilson, RØDE’s Global Marketing & Sales Director. “We’ve all experienced how terrible the audio can be using a camera’s built-in microphone, and the VideoMic GO is the answer to getting audio that matches the quality of the images, without the additional EQ and level features that are available on our other VideoMic models.”

“This user-friendly ‘plug and play’ approach, combined with its lightweight, small form factor make it ideal for carrying in small camera bags, ready at any time to capture the moment.”

RØDE Announces New M5 'Pencil' Condenser Microphones https://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=8253&Title=RØDE-Announces-New-M5-Pencil-Condenser-Microphones

From RØDE:

Inspired by the award winning NT5, the new RØDE M5 features a ½” cardioid electret condenser capsule and is available in acoustically matched pairs.

Designed and made in Australia, the M5 exhibits low noise and has a full frequency response that makes it ideal for studio recording and live performance. The M5 is equally at home on a range of acoustic instruments, choirs, or anywhere you would employ a small diaphragm condenser microphone, either individually or as a stereo array.

A result of many years’ experience building the award-winning NT5 microphone, RØDE has succeeded in making a high-quality ‘pencil’ style permanently polarized condenser that will impress even the most demanding of artists and engineers. This matched pair has been carefully selected to ensure a variation of no more than 1dB sensitivity between the microphones. A premium foiled certificate is supplied to verify the authenticity of the pair.

The M5 is finished with RØDE’s proprietary ceramic coating which offers a sleek matt black finish, and is supplied with WS5 windshields and RM5 stand mounts.

RØDE’s Global Marketing & Sales Director, Damien Wilson, commented: “The NT5 has consistently been one of our most praised and best-selling microphones since its release almost ten years ago. As pencil condensers go it is in my opinion one of the very best in the world, however we recognised that a lot of artists want to use a RØDE small diaphragm condenser microphone but doesn’t require the superlative dynamics and versatile capsule interchange found on the NT5. The new M5 offers them an incredible sounding microphone that represents great value.”

The RØDE M5 condenser microphones will be available soon at authorized retailers.

RØDE Rec App for iOS Updated with Dedicated iPad Interface https://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=7934&Title=RØDE-Rec-App-for-iOS-Updated-with-Dedicated-iPad-Interface

From RØDE:

RØDE Microphones is excited to announce the next iteration of its field recording app for Apple’s iOS devices, RØDE Rec. This update, released to the app store today as a free upgrade, has a number of enhancements including a dedicated iPad interface, MP3 publishing and support for ten different languages.

RØDE Rec has been incredibly well received since its launch in January of this year, where it was the only app on the market to allow for recording at 24-bit/96kHz (using RØDE’s iXY stereo microphone).

This is the first update since RØDE acquired the FiRe app from creator Audiofile Engineering, and signals RØDE’s intention to provide not only the best field recording app for mobile devices, but a platform that rivals dedicated audio field recorders.

The update’s addition of a retina-compatible iPad interface enhances control on the larger device considerably. Users can now view the waveform, transport controls, non-linear editing and much more, all in the one screen making recording, editing and publishing a breeze.

The popular MP3 format has also been added, following overwhelming demand from existing users.

“While RØDE Rec is designed for the capture and sharing of broadcast-grade audio there’s no denying the popularity and indeed the convenience of the MP3 format.” explains Damien Wilson, RØDE’s Global Marketing & Sales Director.

“RØDE Rec is one of very few apps on iOS that supports MP3, and combined with one-touch sharing via dropbox and email it’s a great option when you want to share an audio grab quickly with friends, colleagues or clients.”

This updated version also marks the app’s debut in localised languages, with support for Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Chinese (simplified), Japanese and Korean, in addition to English. The localised apps are available on the relevant international iTunes App stores.

An update to RØDE Rec LE, the free, feature-limited version of RØDE Rec will be released shortly, including the dedicated iPad interface and enhanced stability. Download the app now for iPhone, iPad or iPod touch on the iTunes App Store or via www.rodemic.com/getroderec

RØDE Announces MiCon-11 and Adds iPhone Compatibility for Lavalier, PinMic and HS1 Headset https://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=7728&Title=RØDE-Announces-MiCon-11-and-Adds-iPhone-Compatibility-for-Lavalier-PinMic-and-HS1-Headset

From RØDE:

5th Sep 2013 – RØDE Microphones has announced the release of the MiCon-11 adaptor cable, which provides connection between the RØDE HS1 headset, PinMic and Lavalier microphones, and TRRS devices such as the Apple iPhone, iPad and iPod touch as well as a large number of Android phones and tablets.

This now means that users of these microphones are able to take advantage of the RØDE Rec app on Apple iOS devices, recording high-quality audio direct to their iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. With a large scale update of the app to be released later this month, this functionality will be further enhanced.

“The MiCon system was born out of frustration from working with other manufacturers’ wireless systems.” said Damien Wilson, RØDE’s Global Marketing & Sales Director. “With MiCon the idea is to allow anyone that invests in our microphones a versatile suite of connectivity options, so if you upgrade your wireless system or want to connect it to another device you don’t have to buy a completely new mic.”

“Today’s release of the MiCon-11 really highlights the benefits of this system.” He continued. “Since the release of the smartLav in January we’ve been overwhelmed by worldwide demand, proving that this convergent technology is exactly what today’s consumers and professionals alike are looking for. Now with the MiCon-11 we can easily enable users of our broadcast-quality compact wearable microphones to take advantage of the many benefits of recording direct to their iOS device with the RØDE Rec app.”

The 1.2m/4’ cable adaptor also includes a MiCon male-to-male interface to allow it to be used as an extension for other MiCon cables from RØDE.

With this announcement RØDE now offers eleven different interface options for customers to connect their microphones, including wireless systems from seven different manufacturers.

RØDE Purchases FiRe Application for iOS https://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=7262&Title=RØDE-Purchases-FiRe-Application-for-iOS

From RØDE:

RØDE Microphones is excited to announce its purchase of the acclaimed FiRe audio recording application for Apple iOS devices, from leading US based developer, Audiofile Engineering.

Audiofile are considered one of the world’s best audio software development studios across all iOS platforms. This acquisition now makes RØDE the world leader in iOS based audio recording innovation and expertise.

Under the terms of the agreement, RØDE has taken complete ownership of the app as well as the fundamental code to continue to refine new and innovative software in this growing market sector. In the next few months RØDE will release improved versions of its existing app based on the FiRe platform, RØDE Rec, and is working on new, advanced hardware.

“When we first looked at the smartphone market as a development area for RØDE, I knew that it wasn’t enough to just make a hardware product. RØDE’s goal from day one was to create a complete recording solution -- a platform that we can build around.” remarked RØDE President, Peter Freedman. “I had known and used FiRe for some time and considered it to be the best field recording app available. So in conjunction with its developers, Audiofile Engineering, we built RØDE Rec to further enhance its already impressive audio capabilities, as well as providing high-resolution support for all our hardware products. In addition to the world’s first 24/96 field recorder for iOS, the iXY”.

“Today’s purchase of the FiRe platform brings all of the IP in-house here at RØDE, allowing us to fully control the development schedule and realise many of the great plans we have for RØDE Rec and our iOS based customers around the world.” Mr Freedman continued.

Audiofile Engineering has built a strong relationship with RØDE over the past eighteen months of development, and is excited to see the application now in the hands of a pro-audio company ready to take it to the next level.

“All of the features that make FiRe an incredibly powerful field recorder for iOS make it a perfect fit for RØDE.” commented Matthew Foust, Managing Partner at Audiofile Engineering. “Creating great audio software is our passion, so we’re elated to see RØDE unite FiRe with best-in-class accessories and leverage their global presence to put it in the hands of even more people around the world.”

Audiofile Engineering will continue to support FiRE customers while the transition is occurring.

RØDE iXY Stereo Microphone Recognised with Prestigious Red Dot Design Award https://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=4554&Title=RØDE-iXY-Stereo-Microphone-Recognised-with-Prestigious-Red-Dot-Design-Award

From RØDE:

The RØDE iXY stereo microphone for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch has been recognised as a product of the very highest design quality by the prestigious international Red Dot awards. An expert panel of 37 judges from around the world, including fashion icon Jimmy Choo, assessed over 4,600 products from 54 different countries and identified the iXY as a creative, innovative and overall outstanding product.

Since its inception in 1955, the Red Dot awards have represented the highest standards of product design. It acknowledges the excellent ergonomics, functionality, longevity, formal quality, durability, aesthetics and innovation of a product.

The iXY is RØDE’s first product offering for Apple’s iOS devices, and features broadcast-quality 24-bit, 96kHz recording. It is the only iOS microphone able to record at such a high quality resolution.

It features a matched pair of ½ inch condenser capsules arranged in a stacked XY configuration, ensuring detailed and immersive soundscapes that are always true-to-life. These are housed in an all-metal chassis that makes the iXY incredibly robust, while also adding electromagnetic shielding.

Its unique combination of portability and high-quality audio capture makes the iXY suitable for a wide range of applications, from recording live music to sound design and on-camera use, through to reporting and electronic news gathering (ENG).

“Everyone here at RØDE is incredibly proud of this honour,” commented Damien Wilson, RØDE’s Global Marketing & Sales Director. “The iXY represents years of blood, sweat and tears, and to have it received so well by customers and critics alike is validation of the entire team’s efforts.”

Peter Cooper, RØDE’s Vice President of Design and New Product Development echoed this sentiment. "We're delighted to win a Red Dot Award. The iXY is designed to be the best product of its kind in the world. To receive such high level recognition is testament to the quality of work by the many people involved."

Professor Peter Zec, initiator and CEO of the red dot, pointed out that strong design competence is a hallmark of a Red Dot award winner, explaining, “The winners of the ‘red dot award: product design 2013’ are the protagonists of a highly developed design culture and design industry.”

The RØDE iXY will be on display at the Red Dot museum in Essen, Germany along with all 2013 Red Dot Product Design award winners from July 2nd to 28, 2013.

New RØDE i16 Offers 360º Surround Recording for iOS Devices https://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=4517&Title=New-RØDE-i16-Offers-360º-Surround-Recording-for-iOS-Devices

From RØDE:

RØDE has announced the i16, a surround sound microphone for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch that combines sixteen discrete microphone capsules to capture the user’s surrounding audio environment in broadcast quality.

RØDE’s iXY stereo microphone for iOS devices was released in January, and has already gained critical praise from both musical and mainstream media, including a recent Red Dot product award.

The company is quickly emerging as the leader in microphones for Apple’s portable devices, and the i16 aims to consolidate this reputation.

RØDE’s founder and president, Peter Freedman, explains: “When developing the iXY we were focussed on providing the ultimate in stereo audio capture for iOS devices. But during the project it became that there was a large proportion of the market who wanted to record in complete surround. We’ve taken that seriously and produced the i16.”

The new microphone uses RØDE’s own field recording app, RØDE Rec, to record the sixteen tracks simultaneously at quality up to 24-bit/96kHz.

At the heart of the i16 is an incredible sixteen individual gold-sputtered cardioid condenser capsules, which allows the user a high amount of freedom to record in either surround, stereo, mono, or anywhere in between.

“Once the user records the surrounding environment, software processing inside RØDE Rec will allow them to cancel background noise through phase manipulation of the other channels, working much in the same way as noise-cancelling headphones.” explained Mr Freedman. “In this way the i16 is even more effective at recording dialogue than a traditional shotgun microphone.”

Once the user records the surrounding environment they can then use that track to phase cancel any background noise, very much like noise-cancelling headphones. This results in highly intelligible dialogue and crystal-clear audio.

The i16 is available with both Apple Lightning (iPhone 5, iPad mini) and 30-pin connections. Both are shipping now, with a MSRP of US$399.

RØDE Announces the smartLav Lavalier Microphone for iOS Devices https://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=4138&Title=RØDE-Announces-the-smartLav-Lavalier-Microphone-for-iOS-Devices

From RØDE:

RØDE Microphones is announcing the release of the smartLav, a new lapel microphone that connects directly to the headset jack of Apple iOS devices. Compatible with the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, smartLav delivers premium quality audio capture in a compact and accessible form factor.

The smartLav is a professional-grade wearable microphone designed for use in a wide range of film, television and broadcast scenarios, or wherever professional quality audio is required in a discreet, portable format without the complication and expense of additional wireless equipment, particularly where multiple talent is involved. With the smartLav the user simply mounts the microphone on the talent, connects it to the iOS device’s headset jack and records via the RØDE Rec or RØDE Rec LE apps.

By employing a high quality omni-directional condenser capsule the smartLav captures sound in a forgiving 360 degrees, allowing for versatility when mounting and ensuring a high degree of user-friendly operation .

“The smartLav is an exciting solution that makes professional quality audio available to anyone with access to an Apple iOS device,” explained Damien Wilson, RØDE’s Marketing and Sales Director. “For filmmakers or wedding videographers that have struggled to simultaneously record multiple talent this product truly is an incredibly simple and cost effective solution.”

A foam pop shield is included to minimise wind noise and vocal plosives (hard ‘b’, ‘t’ and ‘p’ sounds), as well as a durable mounting clip with in-built cable management. The smartLav has been designed to pair perfectly with the RØDE Rec app for Apple iOS devices, and is also compatible with any iOS audio app that accepts input from the headset connection. RØDE Rec turns the user’s iOS device into a fully-featured field recorder, with a wide range of equalisation pre-sets to suit various recording situations, in addition to professional editing functions and the ability to publish to SoundCloud and Dropbox directly from the app.

“Both the smartLav and the recently announced RØDE iXY stereo microphone showcase the possibilities of the RØDE Rec app as more than an isolated piece of software,” Mr Wilson explained, “but also as a platform and hub for a range of professional grade audio devices. This platform leverages the portability and popularity of Apple’s iOS devices to make content creation easier than ever.”

The smartLav is shipping to authorised RØDE retailers worldwide this month, at a suggested retail price of US$60.

RØDE Announces the iXY Microphone and Rec App for iPhone and iPad https://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=3924&Title=RØDE-Announces-the-iXY-Microphone-and-Rec-App-for-iPhone-and-iPad

From RØDE:

RØDE is proud to announce the iXY, a stereo microphone for iPhone and iPad with 30-pin connector that allows high quality recording at sampling rates up to 24-bit/96kHz, the only microphone on the market to do so

Appearing at the International CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in Las Vegas for the first time, the company has unveiled the innovative device to an expected audience of over 150,000 visitors.

At the heart of the iXY is a matched pair of ½” cardioid condenser capsules, fixed in a perfect 90 degree ‘near-coincident’ alignment resulting in immersive and true-to-life stereo recordings, captured in incredibly high detail. The iXY uses its own high-fidelity analogue to digital conversion ensuring all recordings are rich, smooth and accurate.

The iXY’s small form factor and incredibly detailed performance makes it the perfect microphone for recording live music, meetings, lectures, reporting, dictation and sound design, and also is ideal for use on-camera as a dual-system recorder for DSLR.

A foam windshield is provided for outdoor recordings, as well as a rugged zip pocket to ensure the mic is always around when you need it.

“I’m more excited about iXY than any other product in RØDE’s twenty year history,” commented Peter Freedman, RØDE’s Founder and President. “The audio quality of the iXY is breathtaking and reallyaffirms RØDE’s commitment to providing the very best audio products available at a price that’s accessible to the general public.”

Released in conjunction with the iXY is RØDE Rec, an app for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch designed to be the ultimate companion to RØDE’s new microphone. When used together the iXY and RØDE Rec transform an iOS device into a fully featured field recorder.

RØDE Rec allows for complete control of the iXY’s continuously adjustable input levels for recording in loud and quiet environments, as well as the high pass filter to cut out low frequency rumbling such as air conditioning or outdoor traffic noises.

The RØDE Rec App is available for purchase from the App Store on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch or at www.itunes.com/appstore. The app provides a full suite of features including multiple sampling rates up to 96kHz, equalization effects (compressor/expander, high-pass filter, low pass filter, parametric EQ), non-linear editing, geo and photo tagging, and one-touch publishing to SoundCloud, Dropbox, email, FTP and iTunes.

RØDE has also announced a feature-limited free version of the app, simply titled RØDE Rec LE.

RØde Announces Updated Soundbooth Application https://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=3183&Title=RØde-Announces-Updated-Soundbooth-Application

From RØde Microphones:

Step Inside the New RØDE Soundbooth for Broadcast Microphones

RØDE Microphones has announced the release of a new edition of their ground-breaking Soundbooth online application, extending the functionality so that users can hear and compare the complete range of RØDE broadcast and videomicrophones.

Released almost a year ago, the original Soundbooth was the very first online application that allowed users to listen to and compare actual real-world microphones, as they would perform in everyday use.

Featuring tracks recorded by renowned producer and engineer John Merchant and focusing on the recording of vocals and musical instruments in a studio environment, the application has been used over one hundred thousand times and has played more than half a million tracks.

This new edition of Soundbooth offers twenty three different RØDE microphones, including the NTG8, NTG3, NTG2, NTG1, VideoMic, Stereo VideoMic, VideoMic Pro, Stereo VideoMic Pro, NT4, NT5,Broadcaster, Procaster, Podcaster, Lavalier, PinMic, HS1, K2, NT1-A, M1 and M3.

Additionally the application includes three forthcoming microphones for broadcast and field recording that RØDE will announce during the remainder of 2012, and make available for use in the RØDE Soundbooth.

The application is split into five different scenarios or applications that broadcast sound engineers would typically encounter, namely indoor and outdoor dialogue, voice over, acoustic music performance and also live reinforced music.

Each audio scenario offers a wide range of microphones that users can switch between in real-time, to hear exactly how each one differs acoustically.

“We are incredibly proud of the Soundbooth platform and to extend its application to our broadcast and video range is something we are very excited about.” commented Damien Wilson, RØDE’s Global Sales & Marketing Director.
“Here at RØDE we are constantly working on ways to educate our customers on the best mic for their application and with this new broadcast version of Soundbooth that just got a whole lot easier”.

A native iPad version of Soundbooth broadcast is currently in development and slated for release in late 2012.
